“Find Me” ~ Christina Grimmie (album review)

“Find Me” is Christina Grimmie’s first attempt at studio recording. The teenaged Grimmie has made a name for herself by posting videos on YouTube performing cover songs, just with her beautiful voice and keyboard.  She has arguably become the most famous ‘YouTube singer’.

Grimmie has been famous since 2009, although I hadn’t heard of her until late 2011.  I heard the song ‘Liar Liar’ on satellite radio (the SECOND single off “Find Me”), and instantly loved it. After looking her up on Wikipedia, I found out she was famous through YouTube. After watching a few of the videos on her channel, I have since become a devout fan (#TeamGrimmie!).

“Find Me” is an EP with eight songs that fall comfortably within the teen pop genre. There are negative reviews on iTunes that say the songs on this album are overproduced, generic pop; and that Christina is better doing cover songs on YouTube. While it’s true that the music on the album is generic, I don’t see that as a bad thing. The songs on the EP are as good as an average teen pop singer’s songs.  It shows that Grimmie can perform typical pop songs in the studio well. In fact, she may do them better than the typical teen pop singer.  Her excellent voice shines in every song, and it is notable that Grimmie wrote or co-wrote seven of the songs.  I have the feeling Grimmie will eventually do more creative music when she becomes a more matured artist, as Michael Jackson did.

The songs of the EP are split between ballads (“Liar Liar”, “King of Thieves”, “Unforgivable”, and “Counting”) and upbeat songs (“Ugly”, “Advice”, “Not Fragile”, and “Find Me”).  The piano-driven “Liar Liar” is by far the best ballad (and song overall). “King of Thieves” is excellent as well.  The best upbeat songs are the hip-hop tinged “Ugly” and electro-pop “Advice” (the FIRST single).

“Find Me” is a good preview to what we will get from Christina Grimmie’s promising future as a studio artist.
